When it comes to certified training you’ve got to ask yourself whether you want to go for total vendor lock-in or choose a more open, real-world approach. Training in Microsoft products is available in both flavours, but from slightly different sources.

Microsoft has two types of training partners, the Authorised Training Education Centres (ATECs), which teach only course material developed by Microsoft, and Solution Providers, which are affiliated with Microsoft but generally use their own, more open course material.

Microsoft is planning on changing the name of its ATECs to Certified Training Education Centres (CTECs), in January next year, and at the same time is bumping up the requirements for training providers wanting to qualify for the mantle. The benefits, apart form the kudos associated with being certified by Microsoft, include access to the company’s official course material.

Wave Technologies is one company that provides Microsoft courses but has decided not to become a CTEC. Alan Bellinger, Wave’s marketing manger, claimed his company has no intention of joining the programme as it believes Microsoft’s course material is not as good as its own.

“If you become a CTEC, you have to give up your own course materials, and we happen to think ours are better than Microsoft’s,” he asserted.

Bellinger claimed Microsoft’s materials tend to tell things the way Microsoft sees them rather than the way they are. He also argued that if companies produce their own materials, they can give a more unbiased view. “Take Microsoft Network Essentials. The section dealing with groupware uses Exchange in all its examples, when in fact most people on the course will be configuring Notes,” he said.

Gillian Brand, marketing manager at Learning Tree, one of the UK’s largest training providers, said her company had also decided not to go for CTEC status as it just seemed to be a “comfort blanket” for customers looking for reassurances of quality.

She claimed that Learning Tree’s current status as a Microsoft Solution Provider provided more freedom. Brand said Learning Tree has a more independent approach to training and shows delegates the bad side of Microsoft technology, and “how to work round the snags”.

Going its own way

She added that the company believes it has very good teaching methods and does not need further certification from Microsoft. “The CTEC brand does offer a certain degree of comfort to customers, but we decided we would rather stay with our own proven training methods rather than having to sing the Microsoft tune.”

Details of the exact change to the status of ATECs have not been released in the UK yet. But the re-branding has already taken place in the US.

According to Microsoft’s US website, the changes will be good news for course delegates, as providers have to adhere to even stricter standards to achieve CTEC status.

Be warned, though. A UK Microsoft spokesperson cautioned that the US changes may not be representative of what will happen in the UK.

At the same time as the rebranding takes place, Microsoft will be upping the standards companies need to gain for CTEC status.

The quality of teaching staff should therefore increase, as the requirements now state that Microsoft Certified Trainers (MCTs) will need to be certified in new technologies.

For example, tutors only qualified in Windows 3.1 will be forced to upgrade their skills. There will also be stricter guidelines surrounding facilities and equipment. The changes include better standards of instructors’ computer hardware, PCs for all delegates, and specialist projection equipment in classrooms.

Despite the promised improvements in the CTEC scheme, you will still be getting the word according to Bill Gates and Microsoft.

If all you require is in-depth training in one manufacturer’s technology, then vendor-certified courses are fine, but if you want your training painted with broader strokes, a more independent provider may be the way to go.

How close is too close?

Companies can choose how close they want their relationship with Microsoft to be. If a provider chooses to be CTEC, it has to use Microsoft’s training materials and adhere to its training guidelines in return for gaining official certification.

The Microsoft Certified Solution Provider mark, on the other hand, is a way of legitimising any company’s relationship with Microsoft; software and hardware providers can also gain this status. In the case of training providers, Microsoft has to approve their teaching methods, but unlike with CTECs, providers are not tied into doing everything the Microsoft way.

Micro-Peripherals has been welcomed into the Cisco stable as an SMB-focused distribution partner after its successful launch into the mobile and communications sector.

Simon Barnard, general manager of technical sales at Micro-P, said: “Micro-P is delighted to work with Cisco in the SMB space. With the resources we have at our disposal, we are positioned to increase market share on the SMB networking portfolio and take the message to market in terms of storage, CCTV and unified communications through IP.

The word valet is defined as a personal attendant for customers, which makes Cisco’s Valet Plus an appropriately named wireless router. There’s no user configuration to get this router up and running; In fact, it’s tailor-made for those that can’t distinguish an SSID from an SSN, as the Valet Plus handles all of the under-the-hood tinkering for you, just like a good manservant. The Valet Plus auto-configures, connects to your computer, and then copies that configuration onto a provided USB Easy Setup key so it can set up other devices on your home network when you pop the stick into them. It’s truly no-brainer router configuration. And the Valet Plus is no slouch when it comes to speed, either.

The design doesn’t look radically different from other Cisco/Linksys routers, but the unit feels significantly lighter for some reason. The sleek Valet Plus is a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi router with three internal antennas that perform 2×3 transmit/receive, effectively doubling the throughput of the wireless signal. There are four Gigabit Ethernet ports housed in the sleek silver-and-white body. The bundled Easy Setup Key is emblazoned with Cisco’s logo.

The unit looks good, but a big pet peeve of mine with Cisco/Linksys routers returns with the Valet Plus: Confusing LED icons. The Valet Plus has the same annoying icons as on most of the current Cisco/Linksys home routers, such as the connectivity status icon that looks like the planet Saturn. I don’t want to interpret hieroglyphics when I’m troubleshooting my home network; I just want to know if my LAN and Internet connections are good. How about more intelligible LEDs, Cisco?

Not only is the Valet Plus easy to set up, the set up is fast. After installing the Cisco Connect software onto my Windows 7 laptop, the notebook connected to the router in four minutes (including a mandatory system reboot), which was a minute less than the Linksys Wireless-G Router for Mobile Broadband (WRT54G3GV2-ST)’s ($127.99 direct, ) setup time. I’ve never seen a router ready to go so quickly. In addition, the Cisco Valet Plus automatically set the WPA-2 security parameters, and it connected without intervention on my part to the least-crowded wireless signal. That’s what I call true no-fuss set-up. What a seamless experience when compared to the convoluted setup we experienced with the SMC Barricade N Wireless Broadband Router ($62 direct, ), which to say the least, did not have a user-friendly setup and was as far as a device could get from being plug-and-play.

Although it was the easiest router I’d ever set up, the process was a bit disconcerting to me, as a network specialist, as I wasn’t in control of my home network. After all, I didn’t know the WPA-2 encryption key or SSID password. The worry, it turns out, was for naught, because the Cisco Connect software displays that information on your computer and allows you to change them. Real propellerheads may be ill at ease with this system, but it’s great for the average home user.

I found it just as simple to get a second laptop connected. From the Cisco Connect software, I selected “Connect another computer or device to your Valet.” I plugged the USB Easy Setup key into the second laptop, clicked on “Connect” and that laptop was rapidly connected with the security settings configured. The Cisco Connect software also serves as a management console that lets you can set parental controls, and enable advanced features such as giving guests secondary SSID and login credentials so that they can jump onto the Web without having access to other devices on your network.—Next: Wireless Testing

Cisco on Wednesday unveiled ūmi, a new telepresence solution that essentially turns your TV into a high-definition webcam. Cisco ūmi connects an HDTV and a broadband Internet connection for wide-angle chat sessions right in the living room.

Cisco used its expertise in business video conferencing to produce a consumer version. The ūmi comes with an HD camera, a console, and a remote, and will adjust to lighting conditions and room size to produce desired video and audio performance, Cisco said. Users can pan the room, zoom in for a closer look, or pull back to see the full picture.

“Cisco ūmi will bring the unique telepresence experience into living rooms and change the way we are able to be together with family and friends,” Cisco chairman and chief executive John Chambers said in a statement. “We envision a future where technologies like this will play a role in connecting consumers with businesses to enable the delivery of new services, ranging from education, to health care, to financial services – to the home.”

“Video is literally the next voice,” Chambers said in a video message. Cisco introduced its enterprise telepresence solution four years ago, which Chambers said “changed the way we worked [and was] probably the most fundamental change in terms of what has occurred in the work environment since the Industrial Revolution and the assembly line.”

A solution for the home is the next step, he said.

The remote will allow users to make “ūmi calls,” access video messages, manage contacts, and customize a profile. The service also allows users to record themselves, and share those videos on Facebook, YouTube, or via e-mail. For times when you don’t want ūmi peaking into your lives, there are privacy features like call screening and blocking, and a camera shutter that closes.

If you miss a ūmi call, meanwhile, another ūmi user can leave you a video message; ūmi will alert you to these messages via text message or e-mail. Cisco ūmi will also support chat with non-ūmi users, provided they have a webcam and Google Video chat.

Cisco ūmi will debut on Nov. 14 for $599, plus a monthly fee of $24.99 for unlimited calls, video messaging, and video storage. It is now available for pre-order at umi.cisco.com. Best Buy will start accepting pre-orders on Oct. 18, and will have it in Best Buy/Magnolia Home Theater stores next month. Best Buy’s Geek Squad will provide support and help with installation.

Cisco is also partnering with Verizon to bring ūmi to Verizon FiOS customers by early next year. Verizon and Cisco have been conduting trials of ūmi over Verizon’s fiber network.

“We plan to be the first service provider to offer Cisco ūmi to our customers, delivering an amazingly clear and lifelike experience that brings family and friends into your living room,” Eric Bruno, vice president of consumer product management at Verizon, said in a statement.

To promote the product, Cisco said Oprah will use it on her show, while existing Cisco spokesperson and actress Ellen Page will also promote ūmi.

Cisco on Wednesday announced a new lineup of Linksys wireless routers for consumers. They have also launched the Valet and Valetplus: Wi-Fi routers for the home user that have an unprecedented ease in setup.

All of these routers feature Cisco’s Connect software, which delivers simple setup with advanced features targeted for the home network. The software auto-configures network settings like SSID and password, making it easy for home users to configure their wireless home network and easy to add devices like additional computers, media servers, and gaming console to the network.
