The 640-822 Interconnecting Cisco Networking Devices Part 1 (ICND1) is the exam associated with the Cisco Certified Entry Network Technician certification and a tangible first step in achieving the Cisco Certified Network Associate certification. Candidates can prepare for this exam by taking the Interconnecting Cisco Networking Devices Part 1 (ICND1) v1.0 course. Windows 7 brings back a feature from older Windows versions: The ability to add and remove bundled applications and services on the fly. This capability is accessible via the Windows Features interface, which can be accessed through Start Menu Search (turn on windows) or through the Control Panel, via Programs/Uninstall a Program and then Turn Windows Features on or off. However you do it, you’ll be confronted by the simple UI shown here.

Windows 7 Tip of the Week: Remove the Windows Features You Don’t Need

The following programs and services can be added or removed using this interface:

Games. This includes all built-in Windows games, including Chess Titans, FreeCell, Hearts, Internet Backgammon, Internet Checkers, Internet Spades, Mahjong Titans, Minesweeper, More Games, Purble Palace, Solitaire, and Spider Solitaire. Depending on the Windows 7 product edition you’re using, you may have a subset of this list. Whether these games are enabled by default will depend on which version of Windows 7 you’re using as well.

Indexing Service. Disabled by default, this is the predecessor to Windows Search and will not normally be needed.

Internet Explorer. Microsoft’s built-in web browser is enabled by default.

Internet Information Service. Microsoft’s web server, and accompanying technologies such as an FTP server and management tools, are all disabled by default.

Internet Information Service Hostable Web Core. Aimed at developers, this version of the web server can be hosted inside of third party applications. It’s disabled by default.

Media Features. You can selectively disable Windows DVD Maker, Windows Media Center, and Windows Media Player if you’d like.

Microsoft .NET Framework 3.51. Windows 7 ships with the .NET Framework enabled, but sub-features like Windows Communication Foundation HTTP Activation and Windows Communication Foundation Non-HTTP Activation are disabled by default.

Microsoft Message Queue (MSMQ) Server. Another feature aimed at developers, MSMQ provides a way for software components to send, save (queue), and receive messages in environments in which the different components might not always be available. Multiple messages can be bundled into transactions that succeed or fail as a group, with rollback capabilities. It’s disabled by default and not of interest to the general end-user.

Print and Document Services. In addition to its core printing capabilities, Windows 7 provides access to a number of related features, some of which are enabled by default, and some which are not. On the enabled front are Internet Printing Client (which lets you print over the Internet Printing Protocol, or IPP) and Windows Fax and Scan (a decidedly old-school application not updated since Vista). Disabled by default are LPD Print Service (Line Printer Daemon, an older UNIX-style printing service), LPR Port Monitor (for UNIX-style Line Printer Remote printer sharing), and Scan Management (for monitoring and administering network-based scanners).

Remote Differential Compression. Enabled by default, this technology works under the hood on both Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 to make network-based file copy and synchronization between those two systems more efficient, on both local and widely distributed networks.

RIP Listener. Disabled by default, the RIP (Routing Information Protocol) Listener waits for route updates sent by routers (generally from Cisco) that use the Routing Information Protocol in a corporate LAN. It is disabled by default.

Services for NFS. This includes administrative tools and the NFS client, both of which are disabled by default. NFS is an older network file system for UNIX-based systems, and these tools allow Windows to interoperate with NFS-based servers.

Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP). Also disabled by default, SNMP is a legacy networking protocol designed for monitoring and administering compatible network-based devices. There is also a WMI provider for SNMP, so that developers can access SNMP data via a more modern interface.

Simple TCP/IP services (i.e. echo, daytime, etc.). This is a small collection of legacy, command line-based network tools including character generator, daytime, discard, echo, and quote of the day. It is disabled by default.

Subsystem for UNIX-based Applications. Disabled by default, this software subsystem lets you run UNIX applications, based on the Portable Operating System Interface (POSIX), within Windows. It’s disabled by default.

Tablet PC Components. Curiously installed by default on all PCs, including those without Tablet PC hardware, this consists of a number of features, including Windows Journal, the Math Input Panel, and some features related to handwriting recognition.

Telnet Client. If you have your own Hot Tub Time Machine and need to communicate in real time with others a legacy Telnet (TELecommunication NETwork) server for some reason, you can install this Telnet client. This is disabled by default, and for good reason: It was an electronic attack vector in the days before it was configured this way.

Telnet Server. If you’d like to host Telnet-based text chats, then enable the Telnet Server and go to town.

TFTP Client. This command line FTP client isn’t enabled by default, most likely because there are far better free GUI-based FTP clients out there.

Windows Gadget Platform. The Windows Gadget Platform, enabled by default, provides the presentation environment for Windows Gadgets (i.e. sidebar.exe) as well as the collection of available Windows Gadgets. Don’t want ’em? Disable it.

Windows Process Activation Service. This widely misunderstood service is not related to Product Activation but is rather a foundational service for message-based applications and components. It is aimed at developers, and is disabled by default.

Windows Search. Enabled by default, this is a core feature of Windows 7.

Windows TIFF IFilter. This extension to Windows Search allows you to search the contents of scanned TIFF files for text. It is disabled by default because the optical character recognition (OCR) functionality it requires is performance constrained. But if you’re going to need to search the contents of scanned documents saved in the TIFF format, this is a candidate for enabling.

XPS Services. Like Windows Vista, Windows 7 includes support for Microsoft’s PDF-like XPS document format. The XPS Services component, enabled by default, provides basic XPS functionality such as printing and saving.

XPS Viewer. This is the end user XPS Viewer application, which allows you to view documents saved in Microsoft’s XPS format. It is enabled by default.

While I have a love/hate relationship with Facebook, I certainly understand the usefulness of the service and do in fact use it regularly to keep up with friends and family. But my most frequent Facebook use comes when I’m on the go, as I don’t have much to say about my whereabouts and doings when I’m sitting at home. And in those situations, a Facebook mobile app is key. I’ve used Facebook apps on the iPhone and Android, and both are excellent. But with all due respect to those platforms, the Facebook app on Windows Phone is the best yet. And that’s because it takes advantages of user experience conventions that are unique to Microsoft’s smart phone platform.

In fact, the Facebook app, which was created by the UI experts at Clarity Consulting, whom I previously profiled on my Windows Phone Secrets blog, is a poster child for correct Windows Phone app design. It retains the Facebook identity, functionality, and look and feel, sure. But it does so while utilizing key Windows Phone user experience features, creating a truly unique and exceptional mobile experience.

The Windows Phone Facebook experience is first rate. In the first column, or section, of this panoramic hub, you see all the main Facebook capabilities for your account. At the top is your Facebook profile picture and latest update which, when tapped, leads to your Profile information, such as your Wall, Info, Photos (“Photos” on the web), Photos of Me, and Pages. Also available directly from that first column in a list are your news feed, photos, inbox, events, profile, requests, notes, and settings, the latter of which applies to the application and not Facebook globally.

Scrolling left to right across the main panorama, you’ll discover other frequently-needed Facebook features. Next up is Top News, which is the mobile app’s display of the Facebook news feed, or what you typically see on the web client first. Here, you can update your status and/or post a photo that is stored on the phone. You can also read and comment on all of your friends’ latest activities. (What you can’t do, and this is common to Facebook mobile clients, is hide posts or friends.)

The next section is a nice, Windows Phone-style photo gallery that extends right beyond the width of the screen and is very reminiscent of the “Recent” column in the Windows Phone Music + Video hub, where there are items of different sizes. You can dive into specific albums here, and view, comment on, or “like” individual photos

Beyond that is an Events column, which lists new birthdays and other events, and then a separate Notifications column.

The Facebook app isn’t perfect, of course. The app’s live tile is a static logo with no dynamic data presentation, and I’d like to see some sort of notification there at least, such as when you have pending messages, notifications, or friend requests. The load time performance is a bit slow. And updates don’t seem to happen immediately. But even with these shortcomings, Facebook for Windows Phone is a great mobile client, one that looks good and works well.

Note: Some readers might be confused by the various ways in which you can access Facebook information on Windows Phone. With the advent of this app, there are now three official channels through which you can access Facebook. The first is implicit Facebook access via the Windows Live “Messenger social” feed, which is configured at live.com; this lets you access your Facebook contacts, news feed and wall posts (via the People hub) and photos (via the Pictures hub). The second is the explicit Facebook account type in Windows Phone, through which you can do all of the above, plus share phone photos to Facebook manually or automatically. And the third, of course, is this new Facebook app, which is much closer to the “full” Facebook functionality you get on the PC’s web browser.

Thanks to the success of the iPhone and its App Store, game developers have a new kind of platform to target, and they’re just now starting to get the hang of what does–and does not–work on these multitouch, controller-less mobile devices. So we’ve found that action shooters aren’t necessarily ideal on such devices. But casual games–board games, card games, and the like–work well. And so do racing games.

And it’s not just iPhone owners that are reaping the benefits. Windows Phone has established itself very quickly as a premier game platform on par with the iPhone, thanks to its inclusion of the Xbox LIVE service and the simplicity with which developers can create games that run on this platform.

So it’s no surprise that the best-selling iPhone title Need for Speed Undercover has been quickly and faithfully ported to Windows Phone. NFSU is the best of the two Need for Speed games on the iPhone (the other, Need for Speed Shift, is actually pretty lousy), and is in my opinion the best-yet racing game on any smart phone. And yep, you guessed it, the Windows Phone version is the best yet because it adds real Xbox Live achievements and leaderboards to the mix.

There’s a plot to NFSU, not that it matters, involving your infiltration into a car gang of sorts. This is completely superfluous to the game, however, and the video cuts scenes are, thankfully, easily skipped. The real heart of NFSU is the ability to buy and totally customize cars, which you use in races in which you earn money for succeeding. And then the races themselves, which are action packed and well-done.

Those races vary nicely from straightforward time trials to some pretty difficult missions in which you need to do such things as takedown a certain number of vehicles in a certain time period. It’s a nice mix, and you can go back and repeat even successful races in order to bolster your earnings and upgrade to the cars and add-ons you’ll need to win future, more difficult races.

NFSU unfolds over three different areas, and features some great 3D scenery, excellent sound effects, and fast action. It’s a fantastic game, and good enough that I’ll absolutely finish it again, this time on Windows Phone. If you’re looking for a fast-paced action title that you can jump in and out of in short bursts–as on a commute–NFSU will satisfy that need. But it’s also a great game to spend a few hours at a time with, and even if you’re not a racing game fan per se, it’s one you’re going to want to at least try.

A feature new to the Dell Latitude Z is its ‘Always On’ function, which provides executives nearly instant access to the applications that are most frequently used and may not require a full boot of the notebook. Specifically, Always On gives its users the ability to access Microsoft Outlook, provide access to a Web browser and sync quickly with contacts.

The Latitude Z accomplishes this by housing a system-within-a-system inside the notebook. In addition to a traditional motherboard equipped with a Windows environment, the Latitude Z is built with a second motherboard that is approximately the size of a business card, complete with a WiFi radio, ARM processor and 512 MB of memory.

That second motherboard allows users to access the Always On function with a single press of a button, quickly providing access to Outlook or a Web browser without having to go through the whole rigmarole of booting a notebook.

The thought behind the Latitude Z is that when an executive deplanes and is en route to a business meeting, he or she can have full access to an e-mail account, rather than try to read an attachment or e-mail on a BlackBerry.

Dell specifically designed this Latitude to make a statement, and while the Z may be a different branch of the family targeted at executives, there are still some features that entrench it in the Latitude family. The notebook is different from the Dell Adamo, for example, because Latitude is designed for the enterprise — that means IT managers can still set security features, protect data and easily swap or replace parts that may become damaged.

The Latitude Z is built with an Intel  Core 2 Duo ultra-low-voltage processor and comes with up to 4 GB of DDR3 memory. The screen on the notebook is a 16-inch 1,600-x-900 high-definition display that is large enough for users to comfortably work in multiple windows.

Storage can be customized by users depending on their requirements. Users can equip the Latitude Z with a single or dual SSD drives, with each drive boasting up to 256 GB of memory.

Charging the Latitude Z can be done one of two ways. A standard cable can be plugged into the back of the notebook and then into the wall to restore the charge on either the 4- or 8-cell Li-ion battery. In addition, a coil is built into the bottom of the notebook that matches to a charging stand. When the system is placed on the stand, the notebook charges as if it were plugged into a wall outlet.

The Dell Latitude Z notebook’s starting weight is about 4.5 pounds. The Latitude Z is currently available from Dell and starts at $1999.

Fei “Phil” Lam, a 17-year-old high school senior from Flushing, Queens, is worried that his idol, Steve Jobs, hates him.

He has a pretty good reason to believe so, too. On Tuesday, the New York Observer ran a story about Lam’s self-run e-commerce site, WhiteiPhone4Now.com, which sells $279 conversion kits that can turn your passé black iPhone 4 into one of those phantom white ones. The kit comes in four parts: a white back glass panel, a white front panel, a white home button, and a set of opening tools, protective case and screen protector. Lam has posted third-party YouTube tutorials on souping up your phone.

When he started the business in July, Lam didn’t expect all the orders that flooded in — he doesn’t even own a mobile phone, let alone an iPhone — but he has pocketed nearly $40,000 since August.

The legality of the business is murky. This week, a self-dubbed private investigator who claimed to represent Apple warned Lam to desist his operations. Lam, whose parents are unaware of the situation, quickly hired a lawyer.
